Unleash your creativity and bring your costume visions to life in our 6-week Costuming Workshop! Learn the fundamentals of costuming, from fabric selection to garment construction, researching inspiration to adding embellishments and finishing touches gain hands-on experience creating your own unique costumes. Perfect for theater enthusiasts, cosplay fans, and fashion designers-in-the-making.
Before registering for this class, you should either own a working sewing machine or be prepared to purchase a monthly membership to work on your weekly homework here in the collective workspace.
Note: The following is a sample curriculum and may be adjusted based on the specific needs and interests of students.
**Week 1: Introduction to Costume Design and Research**
* Overview of the importance of costuming in theater, film, and other performance arts
* Discussion of different types of costumes (historical, fantasy, contemporary, etc.)
* Introduction to research methods for finding inspiration and gathering reference materials
* Guest speaker or presentation on a specific area of interest (e.g. historical costuming, textile design, prop-making)
* Homework:
+ Research 3-5 costume references and create a Pinterest board or folder with images
+ Write down observations about the designs, fabrics, and construction techniques used in each reference
**Week 2: Pattern Making and Drafting**
* Introduction to pattern making basics (flat pattern, commercial pattern, pattern software)
* Discussion of drafting techniques (grain lines, selvedge, etc.)
* Hands-on activity: Creating a simple flat pattern for a basic garment
* Guest speaker or presentation on pattern making software or technology
* Homework:
+ Create a list of garments you’d like to create using the skills learned in this week
+ Practice drafting and drawing your own patterns
**Week 3: Understanding Fabric and Textiles**
* Overview of different types of fabrics (natural fibers, synthetic fibers, blends)
* Discussion of fabric properties (weight, drape, texture, etc.)
* Introduction to textile terminology (weave, knit, twill, etc.)
* Hands-on activity: Measuring and swatching with different fabrics
* Homework:
+ Create a list of 3-5 fabrics you’d like to work with in the upcoming weeks
+ Research and write about the properties of each fabric
**Week 4: Garment Construction**
* Introduction to sewing basics (thread types, needles, etc.)
* Hands-on activity: Constructing a simple garment (e.g. a dress or top)
* Discussion of construction techniques (seaming, gathering, etc.)
* Guest speaker or presentation on specialized sewing techniques (e.g. embroidery, beading)
* Homework:
+ Create a list of materials needed for the garment you’ll be constructing in class
+ Practice basic stitches and techniques
**Week 5: Embellishments and Details**
* Introduction to embellishments (appliqué, beading, sequins, etc.)
* Hands-on activity: Adding embellishments to your garment
* of different types of adhesives and fasteners
* Guest speaker or presentation on specialized techniques (e.g. embroidery, beading)
* Homework:
+ Research and gather materials for embellishments you’d like to use in your costume
+ Create a plan for incorporating embellishments into your garment
**Week 6: Final Project**
* Students will work on finalizing their costumes using the skills learned throughout the course
* Guidance and support from instructor
* Presentation or showcase of finished garments
* Homework:
+ Write a reflection on the process and what you’ve learned the course
+ Share your finished garment with the class
