Sewing With Leather

The Art of Sewing with Leather: Tips and Tricks

Leather sewing is an art form that requires patience, skill, and the right tools. At the GoSew Collective, we’re excited to offer our members access to two fantastic machines specifically designed for sewing with leather.

Meet Our Leather-Specific Machines

Two machines in our shop are perfect for taking on the challenge of working with leather: the Thompson Mini Walker walking foot machine and the Leather Shoe Patcher machine.

  • Thompson Mini Walker Walking Foot Machine: This versatile machine is great for beginners and experienced sewists alike. Its walking foot attachment allows you to easily navigate thick, slippery fabrics like leather, reducing the risk of puckering or distortion.
  • Leather Shoe Patcher Machine: This specialized machine is designed specifically for working with leather, and its compact size makes it perfect for small projects like shoe patches, keychains, or leather badges. It’s also great for a variety of other applications, including leather straps, belts, and decorative accents.

Tips for Working with Leather

Before you start sewing with leather, keep these tips in mind:

  • Use a sharp leather needle and thread specifically designed for the weight of leather you are working with
  • Work slowly and carefully, as leather can be unforgiving
  • Use a walking foot or Teflon foot attachment to help guide the fabric smoothly without marring the surface of your leather
